Mentoring is the best strategy for learning. It all but insures that the mentees will will learn the necessary material. The assurance stems from the fact that the mentee does most of the keyboarding and makes as many as the decisions as possible during the project. Mentoring projects are undertaken with the understanding that the end result will be a production application -- maintainable by the mentee.

NASI is a non-profit organization that provides pension and health care benefits to about 20,000 active and retired sprinkler fitters. The Grails application allows contractors to enter detailed information on the labor hours worked by their employees by local and work groups. Prior to the availability of the web application, a set of complex multi-part form had to be filled out and mailed to NASI. Now administrators for contractors can remit labor hours in minutes.
This application was a rewrite of a complex J2EE Enterprise JavaBean application. The majority of the rewrite was done by CAS Severn, Inc. but Don Denoncourt was used throughout the project. Initially Don provided mentoring for the project lead, followed by architectural advice, and later to resolve various issues that arose during development.
The bulk of KETTLER's web app was a rewrite of, and integration with, a legacy RPG application. All green-screen functionality that KETTLER wished to have surface to the web for access to their B2B partners was provided with the Grails application.
This application currently contains 82 pages and accesses 75 DB2/400 tables.
The Southside web application is used for patient discharge. It accesses DB2/400 tables, prompts the nurse for discharge instructions, and finishes by printing a discharge PDF to be signed by the doctor, nurse, and patient and taken by the patient
The Circuit City Returns application was in production for about a year and a half before Circuit City went bankrupt. Circuit City crashed and burned but the Grails application was very successful.
The application was developed by Alterthought, Inc. who brought Don Denoncourt on as a consultant to work with the development team. Probably the most significant features that Don added to the project was unit and integration testing.
